New Years’ Home Office Goals

Posted by SceneR on November 12, 2009

january-2010

We’re still more than a month away from the New Year but I’m already starting to think about my resolutions. Actually, I don’t make resolutions so much as I make goals. I already have a list of goals I’d like to accomplish in my home office in 2010.

Those home office goals include:

  • Reducing my use of paper. I print out way more documents than I need to print out. I want to get green and go paperless!
  • Finding a better way to organize the paper and data that I do need to keep. I’m already looking into document management solutions and data storage solutions to assist me in completing this goal in the new year.
  • Getting a business address. I use my home mailing address for my business needs but I want to get a P.O. Box for safety reasons this year.
  • Getting out of the office more. I love my home office but I spend way too much time there. I want to work at coffee shops and co-work spaces more often. That’s going to require that I get a better laptop. I’m okay with that!

What are the goals that you have for the New Year? How many of them relate to improving life in your home office?

Why You Need an Office Cleaning Company

Posted by servScene on July 30, 2009

For many businesses, contracting for office cleaning services is a necessity.  I worked in retail for a while, and while we were always responsible for cleaning our own store, most offices don’t operate that way.  Can you imagine what you would say if the hiring manager for a desk job told you that you would be responsible for vacuuming around your desk and taking out the trash?

Besides, having employees do these things is not an efficient use of your company’s money when your employees are more highly paid than a janitor.  Why would you pay your employee $30 an hour to clean, when you could get a janitor to do it for less?

Finally, office cleaning companies are usually much faster and more efficient at their jobs than your employees would be.  They will most likely bring a crew with them, and get the job done quickly.  If you are having them clean during business hours, this is especially important because it means they’ll get the job done and get out of your hair much sooner.

A variety of businesses can benefit from a contract with an office cleaning company.  For instance, if you own a dog grooming business, you could hire an office cleaning company to do a really thorough cleaning once or twice a week.  Obviously if you groom a miniature schnauzer, you’ll have to sweep up the hair yourself afterward, but chances are you’ll be a bit rushed between customers.  Therefore hiring cleaners to do a really good job on cleaning periodically would be a benefit to you and your business.

Putting Your Children First

Posted by Sam on April 23, 2009

As a parent, we take daily precautions to protect our children. We feed them healthy food and we bath and cloth them. We buckle their seat belts in the car and hold their hands when crossing the street. We watch them as they run around at the park, begging them to be careful as they climb and jump from various pieces of park equipment. We make sure they drink their milk, eat their vegetables, limit their sweets and take their vitamins. We worry about everything and make unlimited sacrifices to ensure they are happy, healthy and safe.

We take precautions to ensure our safety and the safety of our family.  At home, we locked the doors and make sure the home is secure. We are vigilant when strangers are around and we watch our children in large crowds or in strange places to ensure their safety. We install ADT security systems in our homes and set the alarm each night to ward off thieves. We review home security in San Diego and watch the news nightly to find out what is happening in our local area. We educate ourselves about potential hazards and try to take part in our community to make it a better place. As parents, we have an awesome job in raising our children.

Outsource Telemarketing My Warning

Posted by Servscen on February 22, 2009

Sometimes you invest in people because you think the job will be done better or at least that you will find better profits from investing. This is why I got involved in outsource telemarketing. The problem is, though, that you may not be getting the best service you could be. I would highly recommend that you spend at least some of your time learning about what the company can offer to you first, prior to hiring them. In addition, find out who they have working for them. Ask for references from a company, really.

Once I wised up, I found a company that was much better at inside sales. They were fantastic for the jobs I had in outsource sales. In fact, they helped me to see that having the right people working on a project was crucial to its success. Ultimately, I was able to pull my profits up considerably. When I left the first company, I was considering filing bankruptcy for the company. Really, it was that bad. Then, an investment into the right company changed my mind. Things have gotten much better and I am seeing considerable sales without all the hassle of having an in house team of untrained professionals.

Teaching about SEO

Posted by Servscen on January 31, 2009

local search optimizationWhen I decided to offer an introduction course on local search optimization for companies in my area, I had no idea what the response would be.  I wanted to offer it not only to promote my SEO business, but also to let others know how important SEO is to their company’s online livelihood.

I had the advertisements up for only a day and a half when my Tampa online marketing company was inundated with people calling and email wanting to sign up for the course.   Seems there was an interested in it!  In fact, there was so much interest I ended up adding two more classes to accommodate everyone.

And I was pleasantly surprised that it was not just online company owners and managers who were attending.  Consumers were also interested in learning a bit more about how SEO affected them and I even had a couple of employees from other Tampa Internet advertising companies who were interested in seeing what we had to offer.

All in all the courses were fun to teach and even I found some of the questions asked challenging.  There has already been interest in more courses, which I will definitely offer in the future.

End of Publishing As We Know it?

Posted by TheScene on January 27, 2009

With the rise of blogging, search engine optimization, page views, high speed internet service, Kindles, wireless internet access (ensuring near-constant connectivity), texting, emailing and even getting our internet via satellite, we are living in a world with a shockingly short attention span that we not only expect, we come to demand as the height of the modern person’s mind.  We are constantly blasted with tiny pockets of information that we quickly process and discard, and some people insist that the American attention span is no longer trained to enjoy and understand a book.  They are too long, too slow, and too boring.  They don’t have the insane energy that is the only hope of capturing the attention of the populace.

I wildly disagree, and yet it is for that exact same reason.  I think the frenetic pacing of the modern world demands a respite, a retreat, and that is exactly what books always have and will continue to provide.  Books are a natural form of learning and escapism, even if, perhaps, the great lesson in them is simply learn how to escape-something you won’t find the answer to on eHow.  Indeed, a person could search their whole life for meaning only to find it between the covers of a book.
